Description

Kahrs Ash Flow – One of the Most Distinctive Floors on the Market.

The first thing you notice about Kahrs Ash Flow is the grain. It is a fabulous statement floor. Contrasting light and dark ash tones create a unique look and careful brushing enhances the natural wood grain. This floor comes in an ultra matt lacquer finish, replicating the natural look of an oiled board without the added maintenance.

Unlike oak, which tends to have a more familiar and predictable appearance, ash often produces dramatic flowing grain patterns that create almost ribbon-like movement across the boards. In Ash Flow, the contrast between the pale blonde sapwood and the darker grain lines creates an effect that is almost tiger-striped in places, giving the floor a level of visual interest that is difficult to find in most contemporary light wood floors.

The visual movement within the floor is calmed by the soft white pigmentation, allowing the grain to remain the focal point without overwhelming the room.

The result is a floor that feels bright, natural and architectural all at once. It has far more personality than many pale oak floors, but still retains the clean Scandinavian-inspired appearance that makes lighter wood flooring so popular in contemporary interiors.

If you’re looking for a floor that immediately catches the eye without relying on rustic knots, distressing or dark colours, Ash Flow does that exceptionally well.

Beautiful Ash Grain with a Soft White Finish

One of the main reasons customers choose Ash Flow over pale oak alternatives is the character of the ash itself.

Ash naturally has a more flowing and expressive grain pattern than oak. The grain creates gentle movement across each plank, giving the floor a sense of depth and individuality without appearing overly rustic or busy.

The white-toned finish enhances this effect beautifully. Rather than masking the timber beneath, it softens the natural contrasts and creates a calm, airy appearance that feels perfectly suited to modern interior design.

We particularly like the way Ash Flow interacts with natural light. Throughout the day the floor subtly changes character, appearing crisp and fresh in bright sunlight while feeling warm and inviting during softer evening light.

Ultra Matt Lacquer for a Natural Appearance

Ash Flow is protected with an ultra matt lacquer that preserves the natural appearance of the timber while providing excellent durability for everyday living.

Unlike traditional gloss lacquers that can leave wood looking overly shiny, the ultra matt finish minimises surface reflection and allows the grain detail to remain the focal point.

Many homeowners are drawn towards oiled floors because of their natural appearance. In our experience, ultra matt lacquer offers an excellent compromise. You retain much of the authentic look and feel of natural timber while benefiting from a surface that is easier to maintain on a day-to-day basis.

Brushed Surface Texture

The boards are brushed to further enhance the natural grain structure of the ash.

Brushing gently removes the softer grain from the surface of the timber, leaving the harder grain slightly more pronounced. This creates a subtle tactile texture underfoot and adds further depth to the appearance of the floor.

Combined with the ultra matt finish, the brushed surface helps reinforce the authenticity of the timber and gives Ash Flow a far more natural appearance than many smooth, heavily processed alternatives.

Long Fixed-Length Boards for a More Premium Look

Kahrs Ash Flow uses long fixed-length boards that help create a cleaner and more luxurious appearance once installed.

This is one of the details that often separates premium flooring from lower-cost alternatives. Many imported engineered floors use random board lengths, resulting in more visible joints and a busier overall appearance.

The long planks used by Kahrs create better visual flow throughout the room, helping spaces feel larger, calmer and more cohesive.

In larger rooms and open-plan spaces especially, this makes a noticeable difference to the overall finished appearance.

Kahrs Engineered Construction

Kahrs invented engineered wood flooring in 1941 and remain one of the most respected names in engineered timber flooring today.

Ash Flow uses Kahrs’ innovative multi-layer construction, combining a substantial hardwood wear layer with a stable softwood core made from spruce, pine and alder.

This construction delivers significant advantages over traditional solid wood flooring. The floor is more dimensionally stable, less susceptible to seasonal movement and better suited to modern living conditions, including underfloor heating.

It is also a more sustainable use of timber resources. Premium ash is used where it matters most — on the visible wear layer — while faster-growing softwoods provide structural strength beneath.

The result is a floor that is stronger, more stable and more environmentally responsible than if hardwood were used throughout the entire board.

Quick and Reliable Installation

Kahrs Ash Flow features the advanced Woodloc® 5S click-joint system.

The boards lock together securely and accurately, creating a strong and stable floor without the need for adhesives during floating installation.

The floor can be installed as either a floating floor over underlay or fully glued down where preferred.

Woodloc® technology has helped establish Kahrs as one of the industry’s leading flooring manufacturers and remains one of the most reliable locking systems available today.

Sustainability and Indoor Air Quality

Sustainability has been central to the Kahrs philosophy for decades.

The engineered construction itself was originally developed as a way to make more efficient use of valuable hardwood resources. By using premium hardwood only where it is visible and combining it with faster-growing softwoods beneath, Kahrs creates floors that are both environmentally responsible and exceptionally durable.

Combined with responsible timber sourcing, strong indoor air quality standards and long product lifecycles, Kahrs Ash Flow represents a flooring choice that performs well environmentally as well as aesthetically.

Long-Term Performance and Value

At 15mm thick with a substantial 3.5mm hardwood wear layer, Kahrs Ash Flow is designed as a genuine long-term investment.

The floor can be re-sanded when required and is backed by a 30-year residential warranty, giving homeowners confidence that the floor has been built to perform for decades rather than years.

While there are cheaper pale engineered floors available, very few offer the same combination of construction quality, finishing detail, design refinement and manufacturing heritage.

In our experience, this is exactly where Kahrs justifies its premium positioning.

Our Expert View

Ash Flow is quite a distinctive floor and that is exactly what will appeal to many customers.

The flowing ash grain creates far more visual movement than most pale oak floors. In some boards, the contrast between the lighter sapwood and darker grain patterns creates an almost striped effect, which gives the floor a very individual appearance once installed.

For customers looking for something a little different from other floors on the market, that uniqueness is a major part of its appeal.

Where Ash Flow works particularly well is in interiors that embrace natural materials and architectural simplicity. The pale colour palette keeps the room feeling bright and open, while the distinctive grain provides enough character to stop the floor feeling anonymous. It works beautifully alongside warm whites, soft greys, natural stone, textured fabrics and contemporary Scandinavian-inspired interiors.

We would be less inclined to use it in heavily traditional settings or interiors where there are already lots of competing patterns and visual focal points. The floor has enough personality of its own and tends to look best when given space to be appreciated.

From a quality perspective, the floor feels really premium. The grading feels carefully controlled, the finishing is excellent and the long fixed-length boards give the room a clean, flowing and professional finish.

Overall, we would recommend Ash Flow to customers who want something genuinely unique. It won’t be for everyone, but for the right interior and the right customer, it is a floor with a character all of its own.

Marlo Boon was not quite the cheapest out there, but what made them stand out was the fantastic customer service, and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. They were friendly, helpful and nothing was too much trouble. When the T bar did not match the rest of the floor I had ordered, they went out of their way to find a replacement that matched (involving trawling through many items in the warehouse), and took the time to call and let me know what was happening. The floor was easy to install, and looks fantastic. It has transformed my living room, I am delighted with the product (Kahrs Oak Straw). Thanks to everyone in the office who made this such an easy and positive experience.

I would highly recommend Marlo Boon to anyone looking for a really good quality floor and honest, friendly service. The Oak Camino is a beautiful floor, bags of character. We oiled the floor after installation, as recommended by the Marlo Boon team, to seal into the joints and it was super easy to do and really enriched the natural grain and colour of the oak. Excellent quality product.

I needed a floor with real character for my client and, having spoken to the Marlo Boon team (who are all very knowledgeable), I narrowed it down to a few choices. They sent free samples out to me in the post, only took a few days to arrive and I settled on the Oak Camino. The lighter shade was perfect for the project and the floor has real charisma. Very helpful in locating the wood and trim that I needed for my flooring project, including getting some of it in from Sweden when needed. When my builders needed extra and I was standing in an airport in Greece, Luke made it all happen over the phone; and for that I am very grateful. Highly recommend.

Really considerate help from Marlo Boon. A good product at a fair price. The only thing that let the transaction down was the delayed delivery by the courier. Even then Marlo Boon did all they could to expedite the delivery. On balance I would use Marlo Boon again and recommend them to any of my friends.

FAQs
FAQs

Buying, Installing & Caring For Engineered Wood Flooring

Helpful answers to some of the most common questions about choosing, fitting and maintaining engineered wood flooring.

How much does engineered wood flooring cost to install?

Installation costs vary depending on the size of the room, subfloor preparation, fitting method and location. As a general guide, professional installation is usually priced per square metre, with additional costs for underlay, trims, door bars or floor levelling where required. You can read our full guide here: engineered wood flooring installation cost UK.

Can you mop engineered wood flooring?

Yes, but it should be cleaned carefully using a well-wrung mop rather than a wet mop. Engineered wood flooring should never be soaked, as too much water can damage the surface and joints over time. For more advice, see our guide: can you mop engineered wood flooring?.

Is engineered wood flooring suitable for kitchens?

Engineered wood flooring can be a beautiful choice for kitchens, provided it is fitted correctly and maintained with sensible care. It offers a warmer, more natural look than many tiles or vinyl floors, but spills should still be wiped up quickly. Read more here: best flooring for kitchens UK.

Can engineered wood flooring be used in bathrooms?

Engineered wood flooring is generally not the safest option for busy bathrooms or wet rooms, because standing water and high humidity can cause problems over time. For bathrooms, luxury vinyl flooring is often a more practical alternative. See our full guide: best flooring for bathrooms UK.

Is engineered wood flooring better than LVT?

It depends on the room and what matters most to you. Engineered wood gives you the beauty, texture and long-term appeal of real wood, while LVT is usually more water-resistant and practical for bathrooms, utility rooms and very high-moisture areas. Compare both options here: LVT vs engineered wood flooring.

Is engineered wood flooring good for cold houses?

Engineered wood flooring can work very well in colder homes, especially when paired with suitable underlay and good insulation. It feels warmer and more natural underfoot than stone or ceramic tiles, and many engineered wood floors are also suitable for use with underfloor heating. Read more here: best flooring for cold houses UK.

Is engineered wood flooring scratch resistant?

Engineered wood flooring is hard-wearing, but no real wood floor is completely scratch-proof. The surface finish, wood species, maintenance routine and use of furniture pads all make a difference. For a more detailed explanation, read our guide: is engineered wood flooring scratch resistant?.

What is the best way to lay engineered wood flooring?

Engineered wood flooring can usually be floated, glued down or, in some cases, secret-nailed depending on the product, subfloor and installation requirements. Always follow the manufacturer’s fitting instructions for the specific floor you choose. See our guide here: engineered wood floor laying.

Why choose engineered wood flooring instead of solid wood?

Engineered wood flooring gives you the look and feel of real wood, but with a more stable construction than solid wood. This makes it a more practical choice for many modern homes, especially where underfloor heating or changing humidity levels are a consideration. Read more here: why engineered wood flooring is better than solid wood flooring.

About Kahrs

Kahrs have been working with wood for more than 160 years, making them one of the olders flooring companies in the world.

They were the first to develop an engineered, multi-layer floor, way back in 1941. Using under-layers of flexible softwoods, meant the floors were far less reactive to moisture and temperature changes, increasing their strength and durability.

Always eco conscious, Kahrs gained ISO 14001 environmental certification in 1997, as waste products from production are turned into heating for the local community around the main factroy plant in Nybro, Sweden. Any ash residue from production is also used as fertilizer in the surrounding forests.

Today, Kahrs is a global market leader, with sales in 70 countries. Their passion for high quality craftmanship, environmental standards and continual innovation gives them a global reputation as one of the highest quality wood floor manufacturers in the market.
