Dust and dirt particles can get caught in the nooks and crannies, the cracks and texture that make rustic oak flooring so beautiful. And this puts some customers off. It’s not a major issue though, far from it. It’s fairly easy to hoover up loose particles and a soft-bristled brush can be used for any stubborn bits to lift them. So whilst its useful to know, it isn’t something that deters many customer from opting for that rustic, natural finish that can bring such character to a room.

Oiled Vs Lacquered Floors

The finish on the floor also has an impact on its ease of cleaning and care. In the case of floors finished with a natural oil, the oil seeps into the wood, still offering a layer of surface protection but without compromising the natural texture of the wood. It’s the most authentic finish you can get for a wood floor but it can allow dust and dirt into the textured elements of the board.

In comparison, lacquered floors create a transparent, smooth layer on top of the board surface which can make them easier to clean and less prone to dirt particles getting caught amongst the natural texture of the wood.

Square-Edge Vs Bevelled Flooring

As with the finish and the style, the edge-type of your floor also plays a part in how easy it is to keep clean. Most customers prefer a floor with a bevelled or micro-bevelled edge, such as the Kahrs Oak Cornwall Flooring. It creates a visual depth to the joints when the floor is fitted together to leave there no doubt that this is a real wood floor, not a laminate or vinyl imitation. The idea is that if you are investing in a real wood floor because of its quality, it’s beauty, it’s longevity, then you want your visitors to know its a real wood floor. In our opinion, if you are investing in a high quality wood floor, like Kahrs flooring, then it’s abundantly clear that it’s real wood, from the finish, the texture, the natural colours and tones, whether there is a bevelled edge or not. But nevertheless, bevelled and micro-bevelled floors are a popular choice. The only point worth bearing in mind when researching floors for the home, is that the bevelled edge, the groove in the joints between the planks, can get dust particles and dirt caught inside.

As mentioned with the textured vs smooth floors though, it’s not a biggy. Fairly straightforward to hoover or brush up any dirt from the joints.

Square-edge floors, by contrast, don’t have that groove between the planks. Kahrs Oak Hampshire is a good example of a square-edge board. The fact it comes with a smooth, matt lacquered finish too, makes the Hampshire a good choice if ease of cleaning is an important factor to you.

Can You Use a Steam Mop on Engineered Wood Flooring?

No — we don’t recommend using steam mops for engineered wood flooring.

Although engineered wood is more stable than solid hardwood, it is still a real wood product and remains sensitive to excessive heat and moisture. Steam mops work by forcing hot moisture into the floor surface, joints and edges under pressure. Over time, this can increase the risk of swelling, movement, lifting, surface damage or joint separation.

Some customers assume that because engineered flooring has a protective lacquer or oil finish, it is waterproof. In reality, the finish helps protect against everyday spills and wear, but prolonged exposure to heat and moisture can still affect the wood beneath the surface.

In our experience, the areas most vulnerable to steam damage are:

  • board joints and edges
  • bevelled edges
  • small surface cracks or natural knots
  • areas around radiators, kitchens and external doors
  • floors with older or worn finishes

A lightly damp microfibre mop is a far safer option. It removes dust and dirt effectively while using only a minimal amount of moisture on the surface of the floor.

If a manufacturer specifically states that a particular floor is compatible with steam cleaning, always follow their exact guidance carefully. However, for most engineered wood flooring, especially premium oiled or brushed floors, steam mops are best avoided altogether.
